Special Info Alister Anthony Chance was born in Grenada on January 11, 1960. He departed this life in Queens NY, on June 30th, 2026.
Alister spent his earliest years under the nurturing care of his paternal grandparents George and Dorothy Thomas and his aunt Elfreda Thomas Greenidge after his father Alfred migrated to England, and his mother Catherine migrated to the USA. He attended the St. Paul's government school until he joined his mother Catherine and his brother Raphael in the USA, continuing his education at the George Westinghouse High school in Brooklyn. He went on to serve in the United States Navy for four years completing his active-duty service in July 1979, He continued his commitment by serving an additional four years in the Naval reserve.
For more than thirty years, Alister dedicated himself to public service through the Department of Transportation, working as a Parking Meter Patrol Officer and a Traffic Device Maintainer, until his retirement in 2022.
Alister will be remembered for his infectious smile, sense of humor and impeccable sense of direction. He had a heart of gold and just did not know how to say no at times. He was always ready and willing to help someone, even when he was at his lowest point. His daughter Shivon was the center of his world. Whenever you saw one, the other wasn't far behind. His love for his family was unwavering. Everyone had a special name for him. He was without question the family's favorite!
As a proud Grenadian, Al spoke affectionately about his homeland and kept close ties to his people and culture. One of his past times was reading the Grenada obituaries. Whenever he answered the phone, his first words were often "Woiii, did you hear? Followed by the latest news of someone's passing.
Alister was also a devoted bird lover. At one point, he owned as many as eight birds. His favorites were a spirited cockatiel named Tango, and Drew, an African Grey parrot who acted as his security guard. Drew made sure he reported everything the moment he saw Alister.
Alister was preceded in death by his father Alfred "Freddie" Thomas, his mother Catherine "Veda" Chance and his brother Raphael "5 bucks" Chance. Left to mourn his passing are his daughter Shivon Mark, his sisters Alison and Pamela, and brother Lennard, sister-in-law Lillian and his partner Noelle Davis. Many other relatives and dear friends including his uncles Ashley Thomas in Grenada and Leroy Cromwell aka Uncle Abdullah in the USA; his aunts Yvonne Donald and Sheila Cromwell in the US, Elfreda Thomas Greenidge, Joyce Thomas, Terris Thomas Charles in Grenada; his god daughters Sherry Mark, Vonnye Mark and Arlene Niles; his God mother Agnita Vincent; Yvonne and Rodney Mark, Dorothy Bruno, Esrin Francis, Victor Ellis, Jamelle Davis, the Mark, Cromwell, Thomas, Chance, Bruno, Maximay, Greenidge families in Grenada, Trinidad, England, the USA, and Canada.
