FAO TO ASSIST GRENADA
ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada: The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will be assisting Grenada to further develop its nutmeg industry as well as to implement a food security program. The $2.1 million assistance will be implemented during the next eighteen months. Assistance to Grenada's black gold (nutmeg) industry covers Post Harvest Handling, Drying Technologies, Waste Management, Analytical Food Chemistry and Essential Oils. The Project is aimed at improving the efficiency of operations and the ability of the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association to produce value added products. According to a release from the Prime Minister’s office technical assistance for the Regional Special Programme for Food Security, which includes Grenada, will come from four Cuban technicians in water management, crop intensification (horticulture & root crops), animal production and fisheries. The technicians will work with farmers and the relevant departments of the Ministry of Agriculture to boost production through the Food Security Strategy.
