MANDELA CUTS SHORT VISIT TO GRENADA. TUTU FOR SCALED-DO...
ST. GEORGE ‘S, Grenada: South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu will feature in scaled down activities here Sunday after Nelson Mandela had to call off his schedule stop over in Grenada. The Grenada government announced late Saturday that Bishop Tutu will unveil a plaque in honor of his visit at 1 pm Sunday at the Botanic Gardens in St George’s. Two spice trees, also commemorating the visit, will be planted by the Archbishop and Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, an official statement said. The Grenada government has cancelled the rally which was to have been addressed by Mandela on Sunday. A state dinner which was to have been held Saturday night was also cancelled. The statement said that Mandela, who was in Trinidad over the last two days and was due in Grenada on Saturday afternoon, had to return home because of “an emergency”. It was not immediately clear the nature of the emergency. The scaled-down ceremony in the Botanical Gardens will be addressed by the High Commissioner of South Africa to Grenada Thanduyise Henry Chiliza, Archbishop Tutu and the Prime Minister. “Members of the public are invited to join other Government Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition and other dignitaries for this special occasion, which will feature some cultural presentations, as well as gift presentations to Archbishop Tutu,” a statement from the government said.
