A total of 52 persons, including representations from 25 organisations, attended a meeting hosted by the Consulate General of Grenada on Friday 30th April, 2004 at 6.00 p.m. at the Consulate. This was a follow up meeting to the inaugural meeting with Grenadian Organisations and interested individuals in the New York Metro area, which was held on March 5, 2004. The main thrust of the meeting was to develop plans to assist in the development and support of Grenada. Following extensive deliberations, the group agreed that the area of health should be given highest priority and in particular, the Princess Alice Hospital at Mirabeau, St. Andrew’s. Towards that end, a fund raising event in the form of a Bus trip to Atlantic City was recommended and agreed on, and planning and public relations committees were put in place. It was also agreed that a fund raising raffle be held on the various buses. Other areas recommended for future support included education, culture, sports, disaster preparedness and social services, with particular emphasis on the aged (seniors) and children. The meeting heard from BWIA’s Regional Manager for North East, USA, Ms. Allison Tucker, who informed the group of the airline’s plans and services to Grenada. At the conclusion of her presentation, Ms. Tucker raffled an airline ticket among those present and Ms. Cecily Mason was the lucky winner. A presentation was also made by Dr. Carol McIntosh, a member of the Carriacou Health Services, who informed of the new Private Hospital Project currently under construction in Carriacou and the services that would be provided by that facility. She also spoke about the assistance being provided by Grenadian doctors in the USA to help needy patients in Grenada, through the Ministry of Health, with medical assistance that cannot be provided in Grenada. The next meeting of the body has been scheduled for June 2004, when the committees would report on their activities, and discussions on the preparations for the 2005 Grenada Independence Celebrations in New York would commence.
