EMBATTLED GRENADA PM TO RIDE OUT POLITICAL STORM.
ST. GEORGE ‘S, Grenada: The island’s Prime Minister will “batten down” and ride out the political storm of the latest corruption allegations against him sources in his ruling New National party has said. Prime Minister Mitchell has himself made no public comment on the brewing controversy, and according to the sources does not plan to yield to opposition demands to do so anytime soon. The opposition National Democratic Congress has scheduled a so-called “people’s parliament” – a public meeting of supporters for the east coast town of Grenville Sunday to “debate” the issue. NNP strategists are hopeful that any so-called outrage against the latest accusations would not gather steam, though there are rumors that some groups might be considering planning what will be dubbed a “march against corruption” in the coming few days. Private organizations are planning a candle-light march on the Prime Minister’s office, in addition to sending protest letters to the regional organization CARICOM and foreign governments represented in St George’s. There is also a plan to invite David Marchant, the author of the article which accused the Prime Minister of taking a half a million dollar bribe to speak to Grenadians at a forum. Prime Minister Mitchell spent the week meeting with newly appointed boards of government statutory bodies, as well as diplomats and visiting a local manufacturing plant. The events were covered only by the Government Information Service, as he was avoided contacts with the local media where they might have been able to ask questions. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
