GRENADA OPPOSITION TAKING COMPLAINTS AGAINST PM TO EAST...

ST. GEORGE ‘S, Grenada: The opposition here is sending an envoy to brief leaders of the Eastern Caribbean who are meeting in St Vincent today on the latest allegations on their counterpart, Grenadian Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell. Dr Mitchell is also attending the two-day meeting, but leaving behind a recorded address to be played tonight to specifically address the allegations of bribery which have been leveled against him by a Miami-based newsletter. The opposition National Democratic Congress is sending Senator Arly Gill to meet with the leaders of the seven-nation grouping in private sessions. Some of the Prime Ministers have already received letters detailing the accusations against the Grenadian leader, party sources here have said. The NDC says the issue concerns “good governance”, something the sub-regional grouping looks into. The latest is part of moves by the opposition to bring pressure on Prime Minister Mitchell to force him to resign in the face of the allegations, considered among the most damning leveled against him in a decade in office. Last night the opposition staged a candle-light vigil outside of parliament building. Other than calling for the Prime Minister to resign over the allegations, the opposition says it wants parliament to meet urgently to discuss the issue. Though the standing orders of parliament cater for monthly meetings, the House of Representatives has not met for almost two months. Hundreds of people, mainly wearing yellow t-shirts of the NDC, sang hymns and offered prayers for the nation in the second public event sponsored by the opposition since the details of the allegations were made public in Grenada. On Sunday it held a so-called “people’s parliament” in the east coast town of Grenville, and a second similar meeting is schedule for St George’s on Sunday. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
