GRENADA POLICE DETAINS ANOTHER POLITICAL ACTIVIST; RULI...
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA: A THIRD LOW LEVEL opposition political activist was detained by police in Grenada late Monday as prosecutors continue to hunt for people they believe may have been helping to publish reports against Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell. NEWSBREAK, which shares the same parent company as CARIBUPDATE reported Monday night that “a woman, whose name has been given as Louisa Belfon, was being held at the Grenville police station.” Belfon, from the St Andrew's South East area, reportedly refused to answer the police's question before she was released. Belfon is the third activist to have been detained in less than a week in the ongoing investigation stemming out of allegations of wrong doing made against Prime Minister Mitchell. Mitchell has stated his intention to start legal proceedings against what he called several people he said have been helping to spread the allegations of wrong doing. Other than the three political activists, a journalist was also detained. However no one has yet been officially charged with anything. A statement by the opposition National Democratic Congress said the government is systematically targeting junior members of its movement as a prelude to getting at the top leadership. Peter David, both a lawyer and opposition politician, told CARIBUPDATE Wednesday morning that based on his information “more arrests are expected to be made this morning.” “There is a seething kind of madness being developed here by this administration, that it is unbelievable. But the good thing is that our people are standing firm and they are refusing to be intimidated,” David said. Meantime, the ruling New National Party, put on the defensive in recent weeks because of strong allegations of corruption against its leader, has organized a public rally for Sunday. The official line is to observe its sixth month in office since last November’s general elections, but it is being seen here as a public show of support form the embattled Prime Minister. The public rally is being staged in the Prime Minister’s home village where the Grenadian leader is still immensely popular. According to reports a national motorcade to end at the rally is being considered. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
