WEST INDIES captain Brian Lara said he will resign as leader of the regional team if it fails to beat Bangladesh in the second and final Cable & Wireless Test match which starts today at Sabina Park. "If we don't win, I don't think I am going to lead the team to England - if we have five days of cricket," Lara said. When asked, what would prompt that decision, Lara said: "If we don't beat Bangladesh in five good days of cricket in Jamaica, I think we need another leader. "Some might think we need one now," he said with a grin. "If we don't beat Bangladesh, who have not won a Test match, then I think we do need to try someone else," a drained-looking Lara told reporters. Lara, who holds the record for the highest individual score, 400 not out, in Test cricket is in his second stint as skipper of the regional side. Since replacing Carl Hooper after last year's World Cup, Lara has only managed two wins in 17 Tests. He has nine losses and six draws since taking over a year ago against Australia. His overall record, including his first captaincy from 1998 to 2000, is nine wins, 19 losses and seven draws from 35 matches. PERFORM "Our aim is to perform over five days, to put everything in the right perspective. I think it would be unfair of me to sort of challenge my mind and find out what will West Indies cricket need to do if we don't win this match and if we give five days of full cricket," he said. Lara admitted the team performed in St. Lucia, but also blamed the pitch. "The pitch was not the best in terms of favouring bowling, even proper spin bowling. I think it was totally in favour the batters, and yes we underperformed. However, I think there was a little bit of a lack of experience in our bowling attack and because of that the guys did not put the ball in the right areas." SOURCE: JAMAICA-GLEANER.COM
