COMMONWEALTH FLAG PROJECT A SUCCESS
The Department of Youth Development in the Prime Minister’s Office will award persons who have made submissions to its Commonwealth Flag Project at an awards ceremony and cultural programme to be held on Tuesday July 13th. Officials at the Department say they are pleased with the tremendous interest shown in the Project and plans are underway to ensure that all participants are awarded. A total of 58 students from 25 schools throughout the State submitted scrapbooks. Students from 10 secondary schools and 14 primary schools made submissions. There were also submissions from the New Life Organisation (NEWLO). The youngest participant is Zonya Gibbson, a six-year-old attending Kids’ Learning Centre, in Belmont, St. George. Persons who made submissions will participate in the cultural programme, during which information on Commonwealth States will be disseminated through drama. The Commonwealth Flag Project was launched on Commonwealth Day (March 8th 2004), as part of the Department’s role to promote the Commonwealth through Youth participation. Young people were required to produce scrapbooks containing a hand drawn flag of each Commonwealth member state, the name of each Head of State and a short profile of each member state. The producer of the first correctly completed scrapbook will win a cultural exchange trip to a Commonwealth country. Producers of the next ten correctly completed scrapbooks will receive consolation prizes, while all other participants will be recognised. The ceremony will also seek to recognize winners of Global Youth Service Day activities for 2003 and 2004. SOURCE: Office of the Prime Minister
