NON-GOVERNMENT BODIES MAY CALL FOR INVESTIGATION
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA: There are signs that the island’s non political sector is growing weary about the lingering allegations of corruption against Prime Minister Keith Mitchell. The Trade Union Congress, the umbrella body of all major trade unions on the island, has expressed its concern about the allegations and has now passed a resolution calling for a full independent investigation. Sources close to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce say the matter has been under discussion, and the organization could also come out publicly calling for a similar investigation. “The truth is the only thing that can clear the prime minister’s name is not his own denials, but a full-scale investigation that will reveal exactly what happened,” a business official said. The Chamber is reportedly growing very concerned about the lingering allegations against the head of government will have on the business climate in the country. The Grenada Conference of Churches has also been briefed on the issue. The Grenada Opposition is planning to bring a resolution in the Senate the next time it seats, also calling for an investigation, and it appears that both the labor and business representative in the law-making body will be prepared to support the resolution. But it can only hope to be passed if it gets bi-partisan support from members of the government. The government has so far resisted opposition calls for a full investigation, instead dismissing the bribery allegations as an orchestrated power grab. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
