GRENADA OPPOSITION CALLS FOR POLICE TO INVESTIGATE PM'S...
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA: Grenada’s Opposition Leader Tillman Thomas is this hour leading a three-member delegation in a meeting with Commissioner Fitzroy Beadeau to present evidence for a criminal investigation into the behavior of Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell. The Grenada opposition is arguing that there is enough evidence to at least start a investigation into allegations that Prime Minister Mitchell accepted a half million dollar bribe during a visit to Europe four years ago. Thomas was accompanied by George Prime, the opposition’s chief whip in the senate, and junior senator Arly Gill. All three are also lawyers. The Grenada opposition was schedule to present Commissioner Bedeau with a letter outlining the reasons why there could be a police investigation, but watchers here say they are not holding out much hope for action. The letter should have also been copied to the Director of Public Prosecution. While under the statutes, the police could conduct such investigations, an opposition official said it is “unprecedented in an island where in real practical terms the Commissioner of Police feels he owes some allegiance to the Prime Minister.” “He once referred to himself as the fifteenth minister, so maybe we should not expect too much,” was how the official put it. Opposition officials also say they are also looking at the possibility of instating private prosecution against the Prime Minister if the police fail to act. For over a month, Grenada has been riveted with debate our conduct of Prime Minister Mitchelll during the now infamous visit to Europe. Prime Minister Mitchell said he received approximately 15-thousand dollars from a German fraudster who was then a Grenada diplomatic representative as a refund for approved expenses from his credit card. A Miami newsletter report quoted a former assistant to Eric Resteiner as saying that it was a half million dollar bribe for make his boss a diplomat. There has been a huge political fallout from the furore. Prime Minister Mitchell has resisted opposition calls for an investigation into the allegations, and also failed to report fully on the incident in parliament. He has however instituted a series of legal actions against individuals and companies he said have sullied his reputation by the allegations. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
