LARA PLEDGES WINDIES FIGHTBACK AFTER IRISH HUMILIATION
BELFAST, N. Ireland (AFP): West Indies skipper Brian Lara insisted his team will bounce back from their humiliating six-wicket defeat against minnows Ireland here Thursday. Back in 1969 Ireland famously bowled out a West Indies side featuring Clive Lloyd for just 25 on their way to a nine-wicket win at Sion Mills. But Thursday's result was almost as impressive after Lara's men had begun their tour of England with a 96-run one-day win against the same opponents here Wednesday. "I can't argue with the result," said Lara. "Ireland played well and I'm very disappointed with my own team's performance "We always respected them but they deserve full credit because they've won this game the hard way. "But we won't be dwelling on this and we are looking forward to a good tour." For Ireland it was the latest in a string of recent triumphs which saw Zimbabwe defeated by 10 wickets last year and English county giants Surrey beaten by five wickets in the C and G Trophy, the premier domestic one-day knockout cup, earlier this season. However this victory, against a West Indies side featuring Lara and several front-line international players, surpassed even those results Dwayne Bravo's unbeaten century of exactly 100 guided the West Indies, warming up for the triangular one-day series with England and New Zealand starting later this month, to 292 for seven from their 50 overs. Ireland though ultimately coasted home to win with 19 balls to spare. Ireland Cricket Union (ICU) chief executive Peter Thompson said: "Forget 1969, this is the game we will all be talking about now. "It's a great day for Irish cricket and I'm sure there will be many more to come." Lara won the toss and chose to bat himself at number eight after expressing displeasure with the performance of his top order in Wednesday's game. But the left-hander was caught for one off 29-year-old medium-pacer Andre Botha, who played eight first-class matches for South African province Griqualand West between 1998-2000. Ireland's Australian professional Trent Johnston, a seamer who featured briefly in the Sheffield Shield for New South Wales, took two for 29 from seven overs. But local medium-pacer John Mooney claimed a creditable three for 67 including the wickets of Devon Smith and experienced keeper Ridley Jacobs. Ireland captain Jason Mollins led from the front making 66 in an opening stand of 111 before he was bowled by Ravi Rampaul. Mollins's fellow opener Jeremy Bray scored 71 before an unbroken stand of 57 between wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien (58 not out) and Andrew White (32 not out) saw Ireland home to a stunning win. West Indies open their international one-day series against New Zealand at Edgbaston on June 26 and will also play a four-Test series against England due to start at Lord's on July 22. Result of a one-day tour match on Thursday: At Belfast West Indies 292-7 Innings Complete (D Bravo 100 no) v Ireland 295-4 (J Bray 71, J Molins 66, N O'Brien 58 no) Ireland beat West Indies by 6 wkts Reprinted from Caribbean Net News caribbeannetnews.com
