MITCHELL SAYS REGION READY TO HOST CRICKET WORLD CUP IN...
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (CMC) - Grenada's Prime Minister Keith Mitchell believes that the Caribbean is more than prepared to deliver "the best Cricket World Cup ever" in 2007. Mitchell has assured the Caribbean public that all the governments around the region are taking the necessary steps to make sure that the ICC World Cup West Indies 2007 will be a resounding success. "We have held two Prime Ministerial sub-committee meetings on the CWC 2007 and I believe we have advanced the process forward," he told CMC Radio. "We are now awaiting next week's announcements of the host venues and a number of countries have invested heavily in the infra-structure, like stadiums, and it goes without saying that we would not have done this if we did not expect it to be successful." Mitchell noted that governments had pulled out all the stops and had several consultations to ensure that no stone was left unturned. "There has been plenty of work taking place behind the scenes and, though there are still many outstanding issues, like immigration arrangements in which there will be a need for plenty of compromises, everybody recognises this," he said. "So there are a number of positive things happening and I would have to say that I do not agree that we are behind." He rejected charges that the bidding process employed to determine the countries that will host matches had brought divisiveness: "I have not seen that in the meetings I have attended to deal with matters pertaining to the CWC 2007," he said. "Even though it has been competitive, but we believe that there is more than enough for everyone to get a bite of the cherry. I think it has helped to unite us a bit more than we have been doing." Mitchell concluded that the legacy that would be left behind from the CWC 2007 of world-class facilities should redound to the benefit of West Indies cricket. Meanwhile Mitchell, in his capacity as chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Prime Ministerial Sub Committee on Cricket, is urging regional governments to speedily tackle problems afflicting cricket in the region. "We need to remind ourselves that sports, and cricket in particular, are vital for both our social and economic development," he while convening a meeting of the Sub Committee at the weekend. "Cricket has always been an important part of our development in the region. It defines, almost entirely so, our Caribbean people," he said. The meeting was attended by representatives of Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, and the CARICOM Secretariat. A major focus of the meeting was Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007, the biggest event ever to be hosted in the region. SOURCE: JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
