IRRIGATION DEVELOPMENT IN GRENADA
The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries and Energy has embarked on a number of irrigation projects intended to assist farmers overcome the hardship of producing crops during periods of extreme dry conditions. The projects will benefit about 60 farmers throughout the State, covering approximately 400 acres with a wide range of crops, including fruits and vegetables. It is expected that farmers would significantly increase their yields and consequently, their income. Funding for the projects is being provided by the European Union Special Framework of Mutual Agreement (SFA), while financing is managed by the Grenada Banana Industry Trust (GBIT). Earlier this month, three containers of irrigation equipments arrived from France. Installation of pipes and other equipments has begun. Farmex, a French company, has been awarded the Irrigation contracts. The Government of Grenada has prioritized irrigation as a major thrust in its quest to improve agricultural production, given the enormous impact that can be derived from this technology. In the 2004 budget, a substantial amount of monies were allocated for irrigation development which will complement the EU funded projects.
