CALL FOR GRENADA’S OPPOSITION LEADER AND PRIME MINISTER...
ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada: A call has been made for the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. Keith Mitchell, and opposition leader Tillman Thomas to meet urgently in the national interest. The call was made by former parliamentarian and attorney at law Anselm Clouden during a media conference Tuesday. Clouden believes the longer allegations allegations of bribery against the Prime Minister remain the more they are festering and will eventually harm the country and Grenadians at large. He claimed that such a meeting is important for the continued economic development of the country and the two should agree on a date for general elections. Clouden added that the type of investigation needed to clear the air regarding the alleged bribery is not just one set up by the Governor General but one of a bi-partisan nature. The constitution states that cabinet and its ministers are answerable to parliament, which is the highest, decision making body in the land. In this case the Prime Minister is answerable to parliament as to what transpired in Switzerland, among other things, based on the allegations against him and based on the very pronouncements of the constitution it is well within the rights of parliamentarians to ask for a bi-partisan inquiry, Clouden said. He added that such a committee will be able to meet with the US Charge d’Affairs in Grenada and make a submission to have the Justice and State Department assist in making Resteiner available since he is a ward of both departments. Resteiner who is alleged to have given a bribe to Dr. Mitchell is a key figure in this investigation and his evidence is of great importance to assist in clearing up things. However Legal Affairs Minister Elvin Nimrod says the Governor General is well within his rights to make the appointment. A fiery Clouden insisted the issue at hand is the type of investigation needed based on the allegation should be criminal one where the findings can be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecution for consideration.
