YVETTE CLARKE DECLARES CANDIDACY FOR CONGRESS

NEW YORK, NY - Yvette Clarke, daughter of former Jamaican-born New York councilwoman Una Clarke, yesterday officially announced her candidacy for the 11th Congressional District. New leadership that understands the new challenges that the district faces was necessary to correct the stagnation that has set in over the years, she said. "We need a mid-course correction," said Clarke, flanked by council members Helen Foster, Alan Gerson and Kendall Stewart as well as members of the clergy, civic and community leaders as she stood on the steps of City Hall. "The 11th Congressional District needs a new vision, new dynamism and a new energy for change," she added. "I am the person who can be the catalyst for that change and empowerment. For too long the potential for growth and development of this diverse district has been hindered by poor leadership and systemic neglect. I will change that." It is expected that Clarke will benefit, especially in communities where there is a strong Caribbean population, from the work her mother put in over the years. Una Clarke was first elected in 1991 to represent the newly-created 40th Council District in Brooklyn. She was the first Caribbean-born woman to serve in the City Legislature. As a member of the City Council she has served on the committees on Ageing, Youth Services, and Economic Development, and has been a chair of the Subcommittee on Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. She has been also a member of the Council's Black and Hispanic Caucus and over the years she has been a strong voice for minorities. SOURCE: JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
