ENGLAND LEAD WINDIES BY AN IMPOSING 478
West Indies bowled England out for 248 with a dominating lead of 478 on the fourth morning at Edgbaston, with Chris Gayle picking up career-best figures of 5 for 34 after Marcus Trescothick reached his second century of the match - the first man to do so at Edgbaston. Graham Thorpe chipped in with a half-century on his 35th birthday, but both were dismissed shortly after reaching their milestones, and wickets fell regularly thereafter. Trescothick reached his hundred with some style, driving Jermaine Lawson through extra cover for four, but was run out after an excellent piece of fielding from Ramnaresh Sarwan two overs later. Thorpe pushed the ball through mid on, and Trescothick called for two runs, but Sarwan chased, picked up, and threw down the stumps with a direct hit from long on which found Trescothick just short (184 for 4). Thorpe had been positive from the start, particularly through the off side, and after crashing Lawson through the covers, brought up his half-century with a pull to deep square leg for four more. However, his aggression then got the better of him, as he charged down the pitch at Gayle and was stumped for 54 (195 for 5). After playing out a few overs, Andrew Flintoff unleashed some powerful strokes on Lawson to keep the momentum going. First he lifted him over long on for six with minimal effort, then pulled him powerfully through square leg for four, but West Indies kept taking wickets, and after the drinks break Lawson bowled Geraint Jones through the gate with a ball that swung in through the air and moved off the pitch for his fourth wicket (214 for 6). Flintoff then top-edged an attempted heave to midwicket off Gayle, and Dwayne Bravo took a well-judged catch (226 for 7). Lawson should have had his fifth wicket shortly after, as Ashley Giles sliced a cut to Dwayne Smith, the substitute fielder, at second slip, but he reacted late to the catch and the chance went begging. Giles took the life that was given to him, and showed he can contribute with the bat as well as the ball with some well-timed shots, the best of which being a splendid drive through the covers off Lawson for his third four. Gayle put an end to his cameo innings, though, bowling Giles for 15, and celebrating the wicket with a muted shuffle and dance down the wicket, which at least brought smiles to the faces of the other fielders (234 for 8). Lawson had another go and getting his fifth wicket, bowling Matthew Hoggard with a ball that nipped away and hit off stump, but this time he was denied by a call of no-ball by Simon Taufel. At the other end, Stephen Harmison got slightly carried away after his success with the bat in the first innings, and was trapped plumb lbw after an over-confident reverse sweep at Gayle (239 for 9). Gayle then wrapped up the innings, picking up his fifth wicket when Hoggard scooped a catch straight to Devon Smith and mid on. Lunch was called at the completion of England's innings, and after the interval West Indies will be faced with the small task of having to bat through five sessions to save this Test. Scorecard: Lunch England 566 for 9 dec and 248 (Trescothick 107, Thorpe 54, Gayle 5-34, Lawson 4-94) lead West Indies 336 (Sarwan 139, Lara 95, Giles 4-65) by 478 runs SOURCE: CRICINFO.COM
