ATHENS, Greece, Fri. Aug. 20: Trinidad and Tobago has scored its first Olympic medal. The islands’ 6’ 4”, 21-year-old swimming sensation, George Bovell, III, copped the bronze in the finals of the men’s 200-m individual medley in Athens yesterday. Bovell finished in a time of 1:58:80, just behind his U.S.’ competitors, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who copped the gold and silver medals, respectively. Lochte finished just ahead of Bovell with a time of 1:58:78 while Phelps scored his gold in a time of 1:57:14. T&T now becomes only the second Caribbean country to score an Olympic medal. The Cubans were the first, now with a tally of six medals, with five being bronze and 1 silver. Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Jevon Atkinson finished second in the heat No. 4 of the men’s 50-m freestyle race yesterday while Grenada’s Jonathan Steele finished third in heat No. three. St. Vincent & the Grenadines’ Donnie Defreitas, competing in heat No. 1, finished fourth in a time of 27:22 and so did Terrence Haynes of Barbados, competing in heat No. 4. Cuba’s Marcos Hernandez, in heat 8 finished 5th while Malique Williams of Antigua & Barbuda in heat No. 2, finished 7th. The Cayman Island’s Heather Roffey, competing in the Women’s 800-m freestyle heat 1, finished fourth while while the Bahamas’ Nicholas Reese, Suriname’s Gordon Touw Ngie Tjouw and Aruba’s Davy Bisslik finished 3rd, 4th and 8th, respectively.
