ENGLAND HOLD FIRM ON DAY 2 OF FINAL TEST
England 410 for 8 v West Indies (at time of posting) West Indies came out swinging on the second day at The Oval, dismissing both Geraint Jones and Andrew Flintoff, neither of whom added to their overnight scores, in the first 20 minutes of play, but England's tail clung on and rode their luck to hold on to the initiative that was gained yesterday. Ashley Giles and Matthew Hoggard's second 50-plus partnership in Tests – the other one was against Zimbabwe at Lord's last year – drove the West Indies bowlers to frustration. Things have darkened up a little after the sunny start, but the weather has held so far. Corey Collymore took the first over of the day with a brand new ball, and after sending down a series of inswingers, he deceived Jones with his fifth delivery, moving one away and taking the edge. Ramnaresh Sarwan held a tidy catch at third slip, and Jones was out for 22 (313 for 6). Fidel Edwards started with a maiden to Flintoff, and in the next over Giles was off the mark with two fours: the first from a legitimate steer past gully, the second off an edge to third man. Edwards then dished up another short one at Flintoff, who went for a one-legged pull but mistimed to mid-on, where Jermaine Lawson took an excellent one-handed catch tumbling backwards (321 for 7). Playing a cameo innings that dominated the partnership, Giles profited through the off side especially, collecting several fours off Collymore, Edwards and Dwayne Smith. Not far behind, Hoggard was off the mark with a nice clip off his legs for four off Collymore, and followed that up by whipping Dwayne Bravo to the midwicket boundary. Two overs later Hoggard was at it again, hitting Bravo for three more fours to take his partnership with Giles to 50. SOURCE: CRICINFO.COM
