ENGLAND COMPLETE WEST INDIES WHITEWASH
LONDON, England (AFP): England completed a 4-0 whitewash of the West Indies and racked up their seventh Test win in a row with a comprehensive 10-wicket victory on the third day of the final Test at the Oval on Saturday. James Anderson took the bowling honours with 4-52 and Steve Harmison chipped in with 3-75 as England's win emulated the feat of Percy Chapman's side in 1929 which also managed seven straight wins. The West Indies, following on, were bowled out for 318 in their second innings leaving England to score a single run to secure victory. Opener Chris Gayle blasted a quick-fire century but once he, Brian Lara (15) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were dismissed the game was up for the visitors. Dwayne Bravo made a gutsy 54, from 115 balls with 11 fours when he was adjudged leg before to Matthew Hoggard playing no shot. Bravo, on 38, had suffered a nasty blow on the back of the helmet when he turned his back on a short one from Harmison but battled on after treatment to post his second half-century of the series. Hoggard was brought on from the pavilion end to replace Harmison in the 58th over of the innings and in the 60th he snared Bravo to give him 1-17 from his spell of four overs before he was replaced by Andrew Flintoff. Chanderpaul fought it out for over two hours and 111 balls before he edged Giles to Geraint Jones behind the stumps for 32. Dwayne Smith, who did not bat in the first innings because of a torn muscle below his shoulder and was told by doctors to refrain from hitting too many aggressive shots in case he aggravated the injury, still managed to unfurl a superb drive for four off Hoggard when he came to the crease. He battled it out for 28 before being dismissed by Flintoff. In the morning session Anderson had taken the crucial wickets of Chris Gayle and Brian Lara. Gayle scored a rapid 105, from 87 balls, his sixth Test hundred and his first against England and Lara just 15. His century came up in 80 balls which means he now has two of the ten fastest hundreds in Test history having made one in 79 balls against South Africa in the winter. Resuming on 84-2 the West Indies romped along at more than five over before Anderson replaced Flintoff at the Vauxhall End in the sixth over of the day. Gayle hoisted him over long-on for six to pass 82, his previous best score against England but in Anderson's next over he grabbed the vital wicket of Lara. The West Indies captain edged to first slip where Marcus Trescothick clung on to a good catch and as he left the field, to a standing ovation, Lara waved his bat to all corners of the ground on what could be his last Test in England. Gayle continued where he left off on Friday night, thumping the ball to all parts and brought up his hundred with successive fours off Flintoff. He was nearly run out by Michael Vaughan when he had 92 but the England captain's throw from the covers just missed the stumps with Gayle stranded. But Anderson slanted one across him in the 31st over of the innings and Flintoff snapped him up at second slip. Gayle finishes the series with 397 runs at an average of 49.6. That left the West Indies 155-4 and with a mountain to climb to save the game - a task that was to prove beyond them. Scoreboard at close on the third day: England first innings 470 (A.
