GRENADA PASSES BILL TO MEET EUROPEAN STANDARDS
ST. GEORGE‘S, Grenada: A last ditch effort has been made by the Grenada government to meet a European Union deadline so that fishermen here could continue to export fish to that region. The deadline is at the end of this month and its objective is to ensure that water is of a particular type so that the ice used to package fish meets European Union standard. Though the opposition supported the Bill tabled in parliament for an Act to govern matters relating to the quality of water intended for human consumption, they were very critical about the timing of the Bill. Opposition parliamentarian Peter David said it is madness to have a special sitting to pass such a Bill when since 1998 the European Union had given its deadline as the end of August 2004 to have everything in place. He added that the fisherfolks could lose out if the Bill is not passed and to come to parliament just a few days before the dead line with a Bill riddled with errors is reckless on the part of government. During the passage of the Bill 30 errors were corrected. Another opposition parliamentarian Kenrick Fullerton said there should not have been any need to rush a bill that has to do with the livelihood of hundreds of Grenadians if the government had true interest in the fishermen. He reminded parliament that it is a shame to come to parliament with a bill riddled with errors on the 99th hour of the European Union deadline. The bill was however passed unanimously.
