CARIBBEAN TEAMS VIE FOR PLACE IN THE WORLD CUP
click
Four Caribbean teams - Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Kitts and Nevis - are still in contention to reach the World Cup finals in Germany in 2006. St. Vincent and the Grenadines, ranked a lowly 150th in the world, have the most difficult assignment among Saturday's matches in the Concacaf region. They take on Mexico, who are at number eight in the FIFA global rankings and perennial world cup finalists. One Mexican newspaper has already dubbed the match a Caribbean holiday, such is the confidence in the Central American state. The Mexican coach has even picked a largely under-23 side, no doubt aware that St. Vincent have leaked sixteen goals in their last two trips to Mexico. Mexico will meet St. Vincent and the Grenadines in Hidalgo Stadium in the central city of Pachuca, then board a flight for an 8 September qualifier. In the same group C, Trinidad and Tobago travel to Basseterre to face St Kitts and Nevis, also on Saturday, with a squad including 10 British-based players. Trinidad beat St. Vincent 2-0 in their first match. In group A, Jamaica, who drew with the United States in their opening game, should pick up three points at home to rank outsiders Panama in Kingston on Saturday. The 12 Concacaf teams are divided into three groups in the second round of the region's qualifiers, with the top two in each proceeding to next year's final stage. SOURCE: BBCCARIBBEAN.COM
