Grenadianconnection.com spoke with Coach Jones, who has trained Grenada’s team for the Caribbean Cup for many years. He spoke about his team and their chances of winning the championship. Here’s what he had to say: On the team’s morale "Our spirits are very high right now and we’re very confident. Our goal from the start of the season was to win and that’s why we got this far. I saw something in this team from the beginning and others are just seeing it now." On their formula for success "Team confidence is the formula that has taken us to the finals. Some team members are experienced and have played in two championships so far." On their opponents in the finals: the Jamaicans "Any team that gets to the finals cannot be underestimated or overestimated. We just have to be prepared and ready to execute our plans. We know the Jamaicans will be coming hard, especially since they lost the first game against us. But in coming for revenge they had better not leave themselves open or we are going to step right in." On the team "We have a young team with a few older guys. Some members have been playing since 1995-1996. About six or seven have played in the two championships that we won. If we can keep the team together for the next four or five years we will definitely be the top team in Brooklyn." On the team’s skills "There is not much difference in skill level in the players. It’s all about team coordination. I didn’t want them to peak in the first three games. By the fourth or fifth game they had the formula and we have just been fine tuning ever since." On life beyond the Caribbean Cup "The team doesn’t currently play in any other league. We’re trying to keep it together and may be get them in a winter league (there’s one on FDR Drive). They train during the winter (outdoors) so they try to keep fit." On team philosophy "Play as a team and play within yourself and at the final whistle you’ll be ahead. We just go out to win every game." On funding for the team "We don’t have any consistent sponsors, so we formed a club—the Spice Roots Sports Club—and that’s how we raise some funds. We have some sponsors for uniforms etc. but no major sponsors." On the crowd support "Since the beginning of the Caribbean Cup, Grenada has had the largest turnout of supporters and our fans always outnumber the other countries. It really makes you feel proud when you come out of the dressing room and see the colors. That feedback from the crowd definitely helps the team to feel confident and to win knowing other Grenadians are behind them." The Caribbean Cup 2004 finals will take place on Sunday, September 5 at the Jefferson High School Field at Flatlands and Shepherd Avenues in Brooklyn at 5 pm. Admission for the finals is $15 and kids under 12 are free. For information and tickets call 718-859-7300.
