THREE-MONTH BABY IS IVAN'S YOUNGEST VICTIM IN GRENADA -...
ST GEORGE'S, GRENADA: A three-month-old baby girl was the youngest victim of Hurricane Ivan that pounded the island September 7, officials here report. In one of the saddest stories of the disaster caused by Ivan, the infant was found cuddled in the arm of a dead 77-year-old relative in the rubble of their home that collapsed on them in Beaulieu, St. George's. Local health officials and representatives of the Pan American Health Organization had put the death toll from the hurricane at 37. They now have revised the figure to 29. Sylvan McIntyre, Grenada's National Disaster Coordinator, said that "while 37 people died within the period the hurricane passed, not all the deaths may have been caused by the hurricane.'' He said the 29, who also include a 31-year-old French citizen and a 63-year-old Briton, were persons who have been "identified and confirmed'' as victims of Hurricane Ivan. Meanwhile, Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson made a whirlwind four-hour visit to Grenada Wednesday. He met with his Grenadian counterpart Dr. Keith Mitchell, as well as with a delegation from the opposition led by Tillman Thomas, leader of the main opposition National Democrtaic Congress. Patterson, who was taken on a half-hour helicopter tour of the island, described the damages caused to Grenada by Ivan as "terrifying.'' Jamaica itself suffered loss of lives and property damage from Ivan. Patterson said that while Jamaica could not now provide financial or security assistance to Grenada, it is able help with technical support in areas such as solid waste management and in construction.
