GRENADA TRANSFERS 40 INMATES TO ST LUCIA FROM PRISON DA...
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (AP) - Grenada has transferred 40 of the country's most dangerous inmates to St Lucia from a crumbling prison damaged in Hurricane Ivan, officials said Monday. The Category Four hurricane destroyed part of Grenada's Richmond Hill Prison when it devastated the island three weeks ago. More than 300 inmates remained at the prison. The first batch of 20 inmates was transferred to St Lucia on Thursday and another 20 were sent on Sunday, police spokesman Troy Garvey said. Many were convicted of murder, authorities said. They were being held at St Lucia's Bordelais Correctional Facility. "The Grenadian prisoners are being housed in one unit," Garvey said. "They are segregated from the rest of the prison population." It was not clear how long the inmates would remain in St Lucia, which returned a favour after Grenada took in 16 St Lucians last year because of security problems at an overcrowded former prison. Grenada's former deputy prime minister Bernard Coard remained at the Richmond Hill Prison, along with 15 others convicted of killings in the 1983 palace coup that led the United States to invade. Hurricane Ivan killed 39 people in Grenada, left half its 100,000 people homeless and created food and water shortages. SOURCE: JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
