COLIN POWELL FOR GRENADA TODAY
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - US Secretary of State Colin Powell plans a brief stop in hurricane-ravaged Grenada today. Powell travels to Grenada after a two-day visit to Brazil. He said he would not venture too far away from the airport because of transportation restrictions and infrastructure problems. Ivan tore through Grenada on September 7, killing at least 39 people, damaging or destroying about 90 per cent of homes and leaving about half the 100,000 people homeless. Most homes lost their roofs, and many houses - including the prime minister's - were flattened. Powell confirmed the Grenada visit while flying from Washington Monday night. He said he had considered a trip to Haiti, where Tropical Storm Jeanne left more than 1,500 dead, but decided against it because Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson had just visited there. Visits by two US cabinet officials over four days may have been too much for Haitian officials to handle, Powell said."We didn't want to overload the circuits," he added. Haiti has already received about US$3 million in US hurricane relief, and Powell noted that President Bush has asked Congress for US$50 million in assistance for all Caribbean countries suffering from storm damage. After conferring with Thompson, "we'll make a judgment as to what else we need to do in the way of visits or other assistance to Haiti", Powell said. Powell's visit to the Spice Isle comes just two days after an international donor conference for Grenada in Washington and as Congress passed a bill recommending US$50 million be allocated to help the battered region.
