Toronto Community Housing CEO Derek Ballantyne
today handed over donations for hurricane relief to the Honorary Consul General of Grenada, Mr. Conrad Gibbs, during his visit to Toronto Community
Housing at 200 Wellesley St. East. Donations were accepted from tenants, staff, community groups and local businesses.
Last weekend, Toronto Community Housing became victim to theft as hurricane relief items were being collected at a gymnasium at 200 Wellesley in
St. James Town. Since then, donations to the relief effort have poured in threefold.
"This massive outpouring of donations is a testament to the generosity of the members of this community and this great city," said Derek Ballantyne. "We're proud to coordinate this community effort and make a positive contribution to help the citizens of Grenada."
Donations for hurricane relief were collected by Toronto Community Housing tenants, staff, community groups, local churches and area businesses such as Loblaws and Marlboros. Items donated include cases of water, food supplies and non-perishable food items, clothing, bedding, diapers and baby formula.
"I am deeply moved by this monumental effort to help my country," said the Honourable Conrad Gibbs. "We are fortunate to be the recipients of the
warm thoughts and open hearts of Toronto Community Housing residents and the citizens of Toronto."
Toronto Community Housing is the largest social housing provider in Canada. It is home to about 164,000 low and moderate-income tenants in 58,500
households, including seniors, families, singles, refugees, recent immigrants to Canada and people with special needs.
