GUYANA'S MUSLIM COMMUNITY SENDS RELIEF TO GRENADA
GUYANA Islamic Trust (GIT) on Friday handed over a donation of relief items to the Civil Defence Commission for shipping to Grenada, manifesting another example of Guyanese goodwill toward the people of the storm-ravaged nation. The donation was officially presented to Major Lawrence Duncan, Commissioner of the CDC, by Mr. Riyaad Siddique, Manager of the GIT Secretariat. The relief material, which includes foodstuff, clothing and footwear, was donated by members of the Muslim Community of Guyana in response to GIT’s Hurricane Appeal, launched soon after Ivan ravaged Grenada on September 7. “Muslims across the country responded with deep concern and generosity after the destruction wrecked by the one of the region’s worst storms in recent history,” says a GIT statement. Mr. Mohamed Husain, Coordinator of the GIT Hurricane Appeal initiative, noted that Muslims in Guyana were very worried about the condition of their brothers and sisters in Grenada, and had requested that some of the donated items be distributed among Grenadian Muslims. This initial donation is worth approximately G$500,000 and will be sent to Grenada as part of the aid package from Guyana. GIT says its Hurricane Appeal continues and Muslims are encouraged to lend their support. SOURCE: GUYANACHRONICLE.COM
