NO AMNESTY FOR UNDOCUMENTED UNDER BUSH
TEMPE, Arizona, Thurs. Oct. 14: Undocumented Caribbean immigrants looking for an immigration amnesty under the George Bush administration scored a major disappointment last night, as the third and final Presidential debate wrapped in Tempe, Arizona. Asked by moderator Bob Schieffer of CBS about his thoughts on illegal immigration, the President said while it’s an issue of concern, he does not believe in an amnesty “…for illegal aliens.” Taking the Conservative line of argument, Bush argued mistakenly that such immigrants need to “stand in line for citizenship.” Yet citizenship is not obtained by securing a greencard but after years of being a permanent legal resident. The President, however, highlighted his temporary worker program, which he proposed in a January address, adding that it will take the pressure off of the borders and help people work and be free. Democratic Presidential hopeful John Kerry also did not endorse an amnesty, instead pushing his plan of earned legalization as the solution to resolving the problem of the undocumented. Kerry also said he’s in favor of the guest worker program but called for tougher border security and a crack down on illegal hiring. It was the first time the issue has come up in the debates. Both candidates also focused on popular domestic issues such as health care, taxes, jobs, the economy, homeland security and the war or terror, abortion and education. But overall, it was the same rhetoric that Americans have heard throughout the debates, with Kerry basing his plans for a brighter America on rolling back the tax break for the rich and Bush slamming Kerry on his voting record in the Senate.
