SOUTH AFRICAN DONATION TO HELP CARIBBEAN
Georgetown - South Africa is giving one million dollars (R6,55-million) to the Caribbean to aid recovery from the 2004 devastating hurricanes, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency said on Thursday. The donation is for Caribbean Community member states affected by the storms, the agency said. South Africa's High Commissioner to the 15-nation Caribbean Community, Thanduyise Henry Chiliza, is to be in Barbados on Friday to deliver the money to the regional relief organisation. The agency groups Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Barbados, English-speaking Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Belize, Turks and Caicos Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Guyana. Though Haiti is a Caricom member, it was not immediately clear whether it also would benefit from any of the South African funds. Hurricane Ivan battered Grenada on September 7, resulting in more than 30 deaths, 6,000 homeless people and the destruction of 90 percent of all buildings. SOURCE: IOL.CA.ZA
