ST. GEORGES, Grenada, Fri. Oct. 15: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will continue his tour of the hurricane ravaged island of Grenada today.
Carter, 80, arrived in the country yesterday and view housing, crop, and rainforest damage caused by Hurricane Ivan last month, but made no public comment.
He is set to meet with the island’s government officials, including, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, Foreign Minister Elvin Nimrod, Minister of Tourism Brenda Hood, who heads the National Relief Effort, and Sylvan McIntyre, director of the National Emergency Relief Organization, today. Damage from the hurricane has been put at over $2 billion, with 90 percent of houses and buildings there decimated and about 50,000 left homeless.
Carter is hoping to attract more international attention to the plight of the country, which faces a massive task of rebuilding. The U.S. government has promised over $3 million in additional funding to the island, bringing the combined total commitment to $4.6 million.
