CARTER TELLS GRENADIANS TO FOCUS ON AGRICULTURE, TOURIS...
ST. GEORGES, Grenada, Mon. Oct. 18: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter feels the Grenadian government should focus on the agriculture, tourism and education sectors as it looks to rebuild the island’s economy. Carter made the statement following his recent two-day visit to the island. “In the area of agriculture, people should be preparing to clean up their forests even before the new seedlings are available, so that when the seedlings are available through the government agencies they would be ready to replant,” he said, adding that Grenadians should plant short-term food crops. He added that the self initiative which Grenadians displayed so vividly over the last month must be sustained for the long term reconstruction of the island. Carter, who is a volunteer on the charitable organization, Habitat for Humanity, also reportedly stated his willingness to lobby the international community for assistance to Grenada. He wrapped up a visit to the Spice Island on Friday, Oct. 15. Meanwhile, the island’s prime minister, Keith Mitchell, also speaking to reporters after the joint News conference with Carter on Friday, urged media practitioners to come together and ensure that Grenada rise again, through programs that would invigorate the reconstruction process.
