RELIEF DRIVE FOR GRENADA PICKS UP IN CALIFORNIA
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: A team from the State of California is busy preparing assistance to send to the people of hurricane-ravaged Grenada. A spokesperson for the team, which is affiliated with Food For The Poor, says there are relief supplies ready to be sent as well as $10,000 received from donations from various people in just two and a half weeks but everything will be going to the people and not to the government. Becky Hypolite who is married to a Grenadian national and is spearheading the relief efforts, told Caribbean Net News that the team will be in Grenada soon and will endeavour to find twenty families who hopefully different organizations and individuals would adopt for assistance. The Red Cross in Sacramento, she says, has also indicated its willingness to assist in the humanitarian drive. Mrs Hypolite is appealing to all who may want to contact her team to visit www.grenadareliefteam.com to make contributions or to get information. Grenada was the first country to experience the wrath of Hurricane Ivan, which left more than 90 percent of its buildings damaged or destroyed, agriculture and tourism in shambles, as well as its infrastructure. Hundreds of people are still complaining of the need for more food, taupaulins and water. There have also been complaints about Trinidadian soldiers especially giving the food for sexual favours, which made headlines across the world. Though it was denied by the Grenadian Prime Minister, he was contradicted by a senior policeman when he admitted on radio that the authorities had received a number of reports from the general public in that regard.
