MORE ELECTRICAL POWER FOR GRENADA
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: The busy town of Gouyave in central Grenada was brought back to life as electrical power was supplied to businesses there for the first time since the passage of Hurricane Ivan. This makes it the third town to receive power from the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) following the passage of Ivan on September 7. Just over a week ago, GRENLEC brought power to the town of Grenville, in addition to St George’s, through the deployment of a 1.2- megawatt generator and is continuing to electrify areas as far as capacity will allow. The Managing Director Mr Vernon Lawrence says if it is necessary to move another unit to St Andrew’s this will be done. The plan to bring power to Gouyave by putting a generator on location in Palmiste, St John's, was shelved, as the poles and lines leading from the power station, in St George's, were made ready fast enough to bring power to that area within the scheduled time. According to GRENLEC Corporate Communications Manager, Zarah Chase, at the moment and over the coming weeks the teams will continue to work in the St John's area in order to connect as many users as are connection-ready. In the meantime, crews are working throughout the town of St George’s and surrounding areas to restore energy to pockets of consumers still without supply.. Also, areas with more detailed problems will generally be dealt with, following those, which require simple applications within the same block or vicinity. Zarah Chase says the company had its survey of damages done in the early hours following the passage of Ivan and the results of that survey is being used to drive the restoration process. Just over 40 percent of pre-Ivan peak generated power is being consumed at this time. It is estimated that by Christmas 2004 the majority of users, will be "in the light".
