RELIEF SUPPLIES FROM GUYANA BEING SORTED
The Grenada National Emer-gency Relief Organisation (NERO) yesterday began stripping and sorting out the shipment of relief supplies sent to the hurricane-battered island by the Guyanese private sector in collaboration with the government. This process is expected to continue throughout the week for distribution to the various centres, Technical Officer at NERO Denise Ashton told Stabroek News by telephone yesterday. Relief items not distributed immediately, including building materials, would be temporarily stored at the trade centre warehouse in Grand Anse. The supplies, which were sent in 26 containers, arrived in Grenada on October 10 and were handed over to NERO on the same day. Apart from the containers sent to Courts in Grenada and another specifically for Guyanese living in Grenada, the remainder was for NERO. The two containers, not addressed to NERO, were stripped and their contents distributed. There was confirmation, however, that some items meant for Guyanese in Grenada were reported missing. These included biscuits, other food items and some tarpaulins. Ashton said after the containers for Grenada were offloaded they were stored in NERO's warehouse on the wharf at Port St George's. She said there was tight security at the warehouse and there was no pilfering of the items meant for NERO. She said the stripping of the containers would continue throughout the week in an effort to clear the bond, as there was need for space. There has been some concern about the security of relief supplies being sent to Grenada for distribution. Minister with responsibility for the distribution of relief supplies, Brenda Hood had told the Guyanese media last week that initially there had been some problems and duplication of relief supplies but those problems had been sorted out. She said one of the main problems was because NERO's offices were completely destroyed by Hurri-cane Ivan. NERO had to regroup and reorganise in the current building out of which it now operates. She had said that initially NERO had not catered for the devastation and the work that followed. However, the situation has been brought under control. SOURCE: STABROEKNEWS.COM
