MORE HELP FOR GRENADA FROM FRIENDS OVERSEAS |
Wellesley Rotary will join with Grenada Rotary in a coordinated effort to provide relief for the Caribbean Island devastated by the Sept. 7 hurricane.
At their Sept. 21 meeting, the Wellesley club heard from Dessima Williams, former Grenada ambassador to the United Nations, who is now teaching at Brandeis University, tell of the damage. She reported up to 90 percent of the island sustained destruction to homes, agriculture, schools, hospitals, churches and communications systems. There is little or no water and no public electricity, she said. Schools, churches and hospitals are damaged or destroyed. The vast majority of all livestock and all crops perished. Thirty persons died.
The Wellesley club will work closely with President Hugh Dolland of Grenada Rotary who is coordinating relief efforts there. It is expected relief will include food, clothing and funds for rebuilding. Within the week, there will be a needs analysis coming from Grenada, along with setting of priorities. In the meantime, those interested in contributing or helping in this effort, should contact Wellesley Rotary member Larry Sheehan at 781-431-2420.
