UWI CHANCELLOR MEETS WITH PRIME MINISTER MITCHELL
The University of the West Indies (UWI) has joined the hundreds of organisations around the world that are assisting in Grenada’s restoration, following the passage of Hurricane Ivan. UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne, discussed the University’s initiative with Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell this morning (26th October 2004) at the Prime Minister’s Office. In addition to previous assistance, UWI is offering technical support in the areas of Health and Education, as well as an international lobby to help relax the financial burden on Grenadian students in the years ahead. For at least a one-year period, arrangements are available to provide a waiver of tuition and other fees for Grenadians pursuing studies abroad. Sir George is concerned about the well-being of the students, and in this regard, told Prime Minister Mitchell that he would seek to relax the burden on them by lobbying for international support. Also, to accommodate improvements in the education system here, Sir George believes there should be a physical expansion of the University of the West Indies. Dr. Mitchell applauded the UWI initiative of providing relief for Grenadian students in the face of trying circumstances, and praised the institution’s efforts as very worthwhile in these troubled times. The Prime Minister noted that UWI already offered to help specifically with Grenada’s ongoing reformation of Secondary and Tertiary Education, as well as provide technical expertise in Social Medicine and Counseling for post-traumatic stress disorders associated with Hurricane Ivan.
