DIGICEL IN ON GRENADA REBUILDING
In keeping with its commitment to assist hurricane-ravaged Grenada’s rehabilitation, Digicel will be using an initial EC $1 million pledged to the Red Cross to start rebuilding the T.A. Marryshow Community College and the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School. Getting the children back into school has become Grenada’s most urgent need in the wake of the widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Ivan. With many students in their final year of preparation for their external exams, the situation has become even more of a cause for concern. Ivan destroyed the majority of schools on the island and some that survived the hurricane are still being used as shelters for people who lost their homes. Kevin White, Digicel’s CEO for the Eastern Caribbean noted: “Education is of utmost importance, and we believe the children’s education must take priority in the whole rebuilding process.” He recalled that Digicel’s chairman, Denis O’Brien, had paid a visit to the island shortly after the passage of the hurricane and, moved by the destruction caused to the schools, immediately set about formulating a plan for their rehabilitation. Both the chairman and the director of the Red Cross in Grenada, Pastor Christopher and Terry Charles, respectively, have agreed that putting the children back into the classroom has become an urgent necessity and Nigel Renwick of TVA Associates has been contracted to execute the rebuilding of both institutions in the shortest possible time. This project comes at a time when Digicel is celebrating its first year of operations in Grenada. SOURCE: NATIONNEWS.COM
