FORMER ARMY MAJOR HEADS NATIONAL SECURITY IN GRENADA
ST. GEORGES, Grenada, Fri. Nov. 5: Former Vice Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff of the Army during the Government of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, Major Einstein Lousion is now the Minister responsible for National Security in Grenada. A senator in the Upper House of Parliament since 1995 for the ruling administration, Louison, until Wednesday was minister of state in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsible for Information, Information Communication Technology and Business and Private Sector Development. As National Security minister, he will now have to attend weekly Cabinet sittings; work directly with the Royal Grenada Police Force and continue to be responsible for Business and Private Sector Development. There is no doubt that one of his major challenges will be to make quite a number of Grenadians regain confidence in the force. It is alleged that many police officers failed to take the necessary actions to alleviate the massive looting that hit the island following the passage of hurricane Ivan. Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell made the announcement on Wednesday night. In a ten minutes address to the Nation Dr Mitchell said that ssecurity is a mounting issue which requires more direct attention and given the multiple responsibilities and other demands of the Prime Minister, and taking into consideration the increased requests for security in different sectors, and at the same time looking at the changing security needs for the future of the Country, he has come to the conclusion that it would be in the interest of the Country to assign the portfolio to a Minister to devote more time and attention to the specific needs of the security forces in the context of the post-Ivan recovery requirements. “I have therefore taken the decision to strengthen the National Security portfolio by recommending the appointment of a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for National Security. Senator the Hon. Einstein Louison will hold this responsibility, along with Business and Private Sector Development,” he said in the address which was aired on all radio stations. According to Mitchell, Minister Einstein Louison brings to the Security portfolio significant expertise and experience, which will fortify the national effort in this regard. The Prime Minister explained that even though as Prime Minister he will have the ultimate responsibility for National Security, he feels that by removing himself from the hands-on and day-to-day responsibility for Security, the action will allow for a fresh vision and new Ministerial focus on the needs and solutions for the security of the Nation, especially in the wake of Ivan. At the time of making the announcement Senator Louison was in St. Lucia where he represented the island at the funeral the late calypsonian Jany Williams, who died in a motor vehicle accident while on her way to perform at a concert she volunteered to host in order to raise funds for Grenada in the wake of Hurricane Ivan.
