ST. GEORGES, Grenada, Tues. Nov. 9: The Grenada government has announced its intention to increase the price for migrants seeking to become a citizen of the Spice Isle, by as much as five hundred percent. Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell, made the announcement last Friday, during the first sitting of the House of Representatives following the passage of Hurricane Ivan. In presenting the motion, Mitchell said that the proposed increase is a small price to pay for the privilege of marrying a Grenadian national. Under the new price scheduled, which must first get the approval of the Upper House before it become law, a migrant who is of Grenadian parentage will now have to pay $250 for a service that is currently free while a foreigner married to a Grenadian will have to pay $2,000, an increase of $1,750. In the case of a person who acquired Grenada’s citizenship and now wants to marry a non- national, the cost will be $2,500. Under the current law, that person would pay $500. A Caricom, Commonwealth, British Protected or citizen of Cuba will have to pay $3,000 under the new proposal, an increase of $2,000 while all others “aliens” will now have to pay $7,500. Interestingly, both Mitchell and Opposition Member, Nazim Burke, are married to Barbadian nationals. SOURCE: HARDBEATNEWS.COM
