MITCHELL MAKES PLEA FOR GRENADA'S PRODUCTIVE SECTORS
PORT OF SPAIN - Prime Minister Keith Mitchell made a stirring plea Monday for special concessions from Caricom for his hurricane-wrecked Grenada, while showering praises on the community's governments and peoples for their outpouring of generous emergency relief after the horrendous battering from Hurricane Ivan. Having accepted the offerings of assistance in various areas and the goodwill that continues to be demonstrated for the Grenadian people, said Mitchell, it would be "disingenuous" for Caricom member countries to now proceed with actions "which are inimical to Grenada's trading and commercial interest". The specific concessions being sought, within the framework of the provisions of the Caricom treaty for disadvantaged economies, were to be considered by the current 10th Special Summit, which is being presided over by Mitchell, the current chair of the regional economic integration movement. "In our post-Ivan recovery situation," said Mitchell to his Community colleagues, "please do nothing that will impair the recovery of our productive sectors." Mitchell also reported that at the first post-hurricane meeting of the Grenada Parliament last week, unanimous approval was given to legislative measures for access to the original jurisdiction of the Caribbean Court of Justice, and assured the Heads that his government remained firmly committed to the success of Caricom in all its dimensions.
