GRENADA OPPOSITION CALLS FOR PM TO RESIGN
Two months after Hurricane Ivan devastated Grenada, questions are still being asked about the leadership of the country in the immediate aftermath of the storm. Grenadian MPs on Thursday debated a motion calling for the resignation of the prime minister as minister of national security. Leader of the opposition Tillman Thomas says the minister of national security failed to provide adequate leadership in the days leading up to Hurricane Ivan and to mitigate for the immediate effects. "As it stands today, there is no confidence in the minister of national security and consequently we have not been able to get the investment both foreign and local to get our nations moving forward," Mr Thomas said. But Minister for Legal Affairs Elvin Nimrod accused the opposition of trying to gain power at any cost, and said that they are the real threat to national security. "I know that those who would like to blame Hurricane Ivan and the prime minister and his government. But I have the fullest confidence in the Grenadian people, in their intelligence, in their fairness. "They will be able to identify, truth from lies, facts from fiction and cheap political shots to gain power at any costs," Mr Nimrod said Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell said that his government has already accepted a level of responsibility and indicated that an inquiry will soon be initiated. "We have already admitted that... there were weakness and the mere fact that the minister of national security has removed himself from the day to day functioning (of that department)... is a clear indication that he has accepted a measure of responsibility." The motion was defeated by eight votes to seven. SOURCE: BBCCARIBBEAN.COM
