A Vincentian, Kamal Wood, has copped the Caribbean Examinations Council's annual award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in the region in the May/June 2004 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination. Thomas received grade one in 10 subjects His school, St Vincent Grammar, was also named School of the Year by CXC for entering the candidate with the most outstanding performance. Kamal also received the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in the Humanities. He achieved grade one in 11 subjects at the general proficiency level: Biology, Chemistry, English A, English B, French, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Principles of Business, Spanish and Information Technology. Grenada's Donrick Slocombe from Grenada Boys Secondary School was the top candidate in Technical/Vocational subjects. Jamaica's Daniel Thomas was the most outstanding in the sciences. Daniel, who attends Ardenne High School in Kingston, received grade one in 10 subjects, all with 'A' profiles. Kimala Swanston from St Kitts and Nevis was the most outstanding in Business Education. She received grade one in nine subjects with 'A' profiles in all her subjects except French in which she received a B profile. The Visual Arts, 2-Dimensional Work prize went to Emma Chapman of Queen's College, Barbados. Chapman's piece, based on a question in the Graphic Design Option, depicts the front panel of a brochure advertising the Barbados Nature Reserve, a tourist attraction. She received a grade one in Visual Arts with all 'A' profiles. Demekos Williams from Turks and Caicos Private school was awarded for Visual Arts, 3-Dimensional Work. He created a decorative plaque based on the theme 'birds'. And, Lianna Baboolal of Naparima Girls High School in Trinidad and Tobago was the most outstanding candidate in Short-Story Writing which centred on a photograph of an elderly man dressed in a suit and sitting down with a look of despair.
