The Department of Youth Development in the Prime Minister’s Office continues its quest to assist in the restoration of normalcy in the Country through its Post-Ivan Community Redemption Project. The Department is reaching out to students, the elderly and other citizens who require assistance. Ms. Mary Alexander of Pomme Rose, St. David’s, who lost her home and belongings during Hurricane Ivan, is being assisted in rebuilding her house. Members of the St. David/St. Andrew Arm of the Youth Department have sourced a number of materials to assist in the rebuilding process. Another beneficiary of the programme is 81–year old Dora Fraser. Mrs. Fraser, who is disabled, received much needed assistance in the cleaning of her home and surroundings. The Department has taken on the task to assist in identifying local residents to volunteer their services in preparing meals for the School Feeding Programme at the Grand Roy Government School in St. John’s. Another school benefiting from activities organised by the Youth Department is the Chantimelle R.C. School in St. Patrick’s. Members of the St. Patrick’s Youth Arm of the Department are assisting students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 with writing, reading and mathematical skills, which is taking place at the Chantimelle R.C. Church. In Vendomme, the Department is assisting with repairs to the home of Ms. Christine Alexander. Other activities undertaken by the Department include distribution of food hampers and mobilisation of young persons for a walkathon scheduled for Saturday, 27th November, as well as the Youth Outreach Programme at the St. George Government School.
