St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the British Virgin Islands and Grenada all won on Sunday to claim the last three spots in the second round of qualifying for the Caribbean Cup and next year's CONCACAF Gold Cup. St. Vincent beat the Cayman Islands 4-0 while the British Virgin Islands beat Bermuda 2-0 to top Group E. Grenada claimed second place in Group D with a 5-2 victory over Puerto Rico. The three joined Jamaica, Haiti, French Guyana, Martinique, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia in the second round of qualifying, a two-leg playoff on December 12 and 19 that will whittle the field to six for another series of two-leg playoffs on January 9 and 16. The three survivors will join Barbados in the fight for the Caribbean Cup February 20-24 in Barbados and three berths in the Gold Cup in July. In the next round, Jamaica faces St. Lucia, Haiti opposes St. Kitts and Nevis, Martinique takes on Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago plays the British Virgin Islands, while Grenada meets St. Vincent and Grenadines. French Guyana has a bye into the third round. Shandel Samuel was the hero for St. Vincent, giving his side the lead in the 20th minute off a pass from Renson Haynes, and being brought down by Horace Nelson which led to Matthew Forde's 43rd-minute penalty. Haynes scored one of his own in the 51st minute and Kenlyn Gonsalves completed the victory in the 80th minute. Similarly, Venton James led the British Virgin Islands, scoring in the 12th and 28th minutes for the victory. It enabled St. Vincent to win the group with five points, one more than the British Virgin Islands, which advanced over Bermuda on goal difference. In Tunapuna, Trinidad, Grenada took advantage of an own goal seconds into the match by Marco Velez, added four of their own and then strongly supported Trinidad in its 1-0 victory over Suriname. The victory by Trinidad, which already had clinched its berth, left Suriname with two points, two behind Grenada, in the fight for the second berth from Group D. Ricky 'Curry' Charles, Dennis Rennie, Bernard Williams and Cassim Langaigne gave Grenada a 5-0 lead by the 75th minute, and despite a penalty that Charles banged off the post, were further aided when Velez was sent off for his second yellow card in the 60th minute. For Trinidad, MetroStars forward Cornell Glen provided the winner in the 65th minute, converting from close range after the defence failed to clear a cross from midfielder Kerwyn Jemmott. It was Glen's fourth goal of the tournament, following his three on Wednesday in a 5-0 victory against Puerto Rico. In Sunday's only other games, Jamaica beat Haiti 3-1 to win Group A, while the U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Martin played a 0-0 draw. Jamaica and Haiti already had clinched their berths in the second round, playing only for the right to play St. Lucia over St. Kitts. Khari Stephenson of the Kansas City Wizards gave Jamaica the lead in the 19th minute with a long-range shot which deflected off a Haitian player and beat the goalkeeper. A minute later, striker Roland Dean held off the challenges of two defenders before scoring. Jamaica increased its advantage to 3-0 in the 28th minute when Luton Shelton latched onto to a through pass from midfielder Jermaine Hue to score. Three minutes before half-time, Richardson Ulcena got the Haitian's goal with a volley that beat Jamaican goalkeeper Sean Swayers at the near post. The draw by the US Virgin Islands and St. Martin gave both teams a point in a four-team group where the two combined to be outscored 36-0 in their combined six matches. Reprinted from sbs.com
