GRENADA PM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF PARLIAMENTARY SERVICE...
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: Friday, December 3 marks a significant milestone in the parliamentary career of Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell. On that day, 20 years ago, Dr. Mitchell was elected Member of Parliament representing the Constituency of St. George’s North West for the New National Party (NNP), and embarked on a parliamentary career that has not been matched by any parliamentarian since Grenada gained Independence in 1974. No other Grenadian parliamentarian has been re-elected consecutively in all five general elections since December 3, 1984. No other Grenadian parliamentarian has served for two decades, being Prime Minister for more than nine years during that period. Dr. Mitchell began his parliamentary career as Minister of Communications, Works and Public Utilities, Transportation, Civil Aviation and Energy from 1984 to 1988 and then as Minister of Communications, Works and Public Utilities, Cooperatives, Community Development, Women’s Affairs and Civil Aviation from 1988 to 1989. After being re-elected in the 1990 General Election, Dr. Mitchell served as an Opposition Member of Parliament until 1995. Dr. Mitchell attained a personal victory in the 1995 General Election. He was appointed Prime Minister on June 22, 1995. In the 1999 General Election, Dr. Mitchell became the first Prime Minister since Independence to win two consecutive general elections. This victory was also unprecedented in that the NNP won all 15 constituencies. From 1995 to 1999 Dr. Mitchell served as Prime Minister, Minister of National Security, Mobilisation, Carriacou and Petit Martinique Affairs, Finance, Trade, Industry and Planning, Information and Foreign Affairs. Following the January 1999 General Election, the Prime Minister’s portfolios comprised Minister of National Security, Finance, Trade, Industry and Planning, Information until November, when his portfolios comprised Minister of National Security and Information. Prime Minister Mitchell attained another milestone on November 27, 2003, when he was again elected by the people of Grenada to serve a third consecutive term as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister currently holds the portfolios of National Security, Human Resource Development, Information, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Business and Private Sector Development and Youth Development.
