QUAKE SENDS TREMORS THROUGH T&T
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Fri. Dec. 2: Eleven days after both Dominica and Guadeloupe were rocked by an earthquake, Trinis yesterday got a scare as a quake measuring between 5.0 and 5.4 on the Richter Scale shook the eastern coast of Trinidad and Tobago. No damages to nationals or buildings were reported but the Trinidad Express claimed that the Piarco runway was temporarily closed and cellphones were jammed as buildings shook around 3.16 p.m yesterday. The entire tremor reportedly lasted only 10 seconds and was mostly felt in Mayaro, south of Port-of-Spain and areas along the South-East belt. Point Fortin, San Fernando, Diego Martin and St. Joseph, according to the Express. It was also felt in Crown Point, Tobago, according to the The University Of The West Indies Seismic Research Unit. Scientists have described yesterday’s quake as a moderate-sized one. On May 3rd, 1994 an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred off of the east coast of Trinidad. Aftershocks from that earthquake lasted for approximately four weeks. This was the last recorded earthquake of similar magnitude. Dominica and Guadeloupe were both hit by a 6.0 quake on Nov. 21. It left one child dead in Guadeloupe and structural damages to building in both islands. Reprinted from Hardbeatnews.com
