ENVIRONMENTAL COORDINATING COMMITTEE MEETS WITH SOLID W...
Minister of Health, Social Security, the Environment and Ecclesiastic Relations Senator Ann David-Antoine on Friday (December 3) led the Environmental Coordinating Committee on a tour of several sites to determine progress in environmental clean-up. Accompanied by Committee representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, the Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority, National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA), Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWWMCOL) of Trinidad and Tobago and OXFAM, Senator David-Antoine visited Grand Etang, the former landfill site at Telescope, St. Andrew’s and Grand Anse Beach in St. George’s, as well as areas in St. David’s, and St. Paul’s. The Committee, which has been meeting weekly since being formed shortly after the passage of Hurricane Ivan on September 7, took the opportunity to view waste disposal practices firsthand and speak with workers. Minister David-Antoine noted that environmental sustainability and effective solid waste management remain priority focal areas for the Ministry, adding that the passage of Hurricane Ivan has created additional pressures for waste disposal workers, given the level of debris left in its wake.
