ESU STUDENT AIDS GRENADA'S HURRICANE VICTIMS
Samantha Munroe, a student at East Stroudsburg University and a co-president of the United Campus Ministry of ESU, is asking for donations to aid in the transport of supplies to the Grenada Disaster Relief Fund headquarters in Miami. Almost a month ago, Hurricane Ivan devastated the islands of the West Indies. Grenada was the first island to experience the hurricane's wrath; a reported 90 percent of homes and businesses were destroyed. "The magnitude of damage in some instances in incalculable," said Grenada's prime minister, Keith Mitchell, in a national address in October, one month after the hurricane struck, according to grenadaconsulate.org. Members of the United Campus Ministry have gathered supplies to assuage the greatest needs of the area. The group needs financial support to ship the items. Munroe moved to Stroudsburg to attend ESU. Her family is from Grenada and her grandmother, aunt and cousin still live there. They told Munroe's mother about the devastation there, and that's when the student decided to help. "Because I've lived in another country, I know how it is for people who don't have access to things like we do in America," she said. Munroe will meet her cousin for the first time and see the disaster first-hand when she goes to Grenada over Christmas break. She was 10 years old when she left the country, but she remembers "bits and pieces" of life in Grenada. Because people who live in the Third World country are used to doing things for themselves, Munroe is confident that, with a little help, Grenada will revive. "We will combine (the donations) in a big check and put it in the Florida account that goes to the Grenada Disaster Relief Fund. We want to send as much as people are willing to give," Munroe said. "People have to look into their hearts and into their financial situations." Reprinted from poconorecord.com
