"I know I am speaking for the Government and people of Grenada when I say we deeply appreciate the sacrifices and work you have given to the Country over the last three months during this most critical time.” With those words, Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell bid farewell, on behalf of the Government and people of Grenada, to Officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force who departed Grenada today via a BWIA flight. The Prime Minister, who is also chairman of the Caribbean Community, said the Officers did more than provide security for Grenada following the passage of Hurricane Ivan. “Because of the selflessness you have shown and the work you have done,” the Prime Minister told the Officers, their work serves as a model for other Caribbean countries and also creates an atmosphere to further advance the process of Caribbean Integration. Prime Minister Mitchell said the Government of Grenada fully endorses the decision by the Officers to return to their families for Christmas, noting that Grenadians recognise Christmas as “family time.” Lt. Col. Rodney Smart said the 55 Officers provided assistance with security and stabilising the Country. He expects that when more Officers return after the New Year, they will specialise in construction and engineering. “The focus will be construction as opposed to security,” Lt. Col. Smart said.
